SLNRA have a number of projects that we aim to implement
in the south Lough Neagh area in the near future.
Click on the links below for a brief description of
potential projects that have been identified by SLNRA
to help regenerate our rural communities.
Application to Heritage
Lottery Fund ‘Area Partnership Scheme.’
HLF application – submitted on 26th September
2002
In the main the application focused on the built,
cultural and natural aspects of the Wetlands environment.
The draft projects for this application were:
Signage and Interpretation of The Wetlands; Information
and Promotion of The Wetlands; Use of Communication
Technology; Access and Biodiversity; The Wetlands
Bird watching Trail; Derrywarragh Island Management;
Scientific Study of the Wetlands; Physical Built Heritage;
New Approach to Land Management; and
Cultural Heritage Interpretation. The total sought
from the HLF was £1.2m of a £1.8m proposal.

Derrywarragh Island
Access and Biodiversity Project.
Successful application made to EU Building Sustainable
Prosperity Programme and administered by the EHS.
£45,000 secured for creating physical and intellectual
access with a strong focus on the biodiversity of
the site. Project being undertaken in conjunction
with Craigavon Council’s access officer. Implementation
to commence this year.

Interreg III
Met with this funding body and followed up with cross
border groups regarding the need to work together
to attract money from this interregional funding organisation.
Community Fund
An application was submitted to the Community Fund
May 2003 to seek a further 2 years financial support
to employ Project Director, Community Information
& Support Worker and associated running costs
(£111,000).
If successful the Association will be able to continue
to implement projects that will help meet the aims
and objectives detailed in SLNRA Plan of Action 2002-2004.
Decision will be notified September 2003.

Wetlands Sculpture
Trail
The ‘Wetlands Sculpture Trail’ is a visionary
project conceived by South Lough Neagh Regeneration
Association (SLNRA), Craigavon Borough Council and
Sustrans Northern Ireland.
The project is to develop up to 6 pieces of public
art along the Loughshore Trail (a 128 mile cycle route
around Lough Neagh and Lough Beg) in the south Lough
Neagh area.
Application has been submitted to Arts Council for
Northern Ireland for phase 1 of the project (£18,000).

Schools Recycling Project
£2,500 has been granted by Craigavon Borough
Council to fund a pilot programme in 4 loughshore
primary schools. The project will be aimed ay Key
stage 2 pupils to illustrate how recycling can alleviate
the pressures from landfill and its detrimental effects
on local wildlife and ecosystems.
All materials used in the delivery of the programme
will be specifically designed to incorporate local
examples of fragile ecosystems e.g. Lough Neagh, Wetlands.
The project will educate pupils of simple recycling
measures that can be implemented at a household /
classroom level that can help reduce the problems
of waste disposal while empowering them to do something
positive for their local environment.

Corn Dollies
A funding application has been submitted to Craigavon
Borough Council’s Arts Development Grant Aid
2003-2004 to run workshops in 7 local primary schools
to learn children the technique of making traditional
corn dollies – based on the same principle of
‘willow weaving project’ previously delivered
to schools.

South Lough Neagh
Business Development Programme
A project design brief has been formulated by SLNRA
for ‘South Lough Neagh Business Development
Programme’.
The rationale of the project is to create a vibrant
economy by encouraging new entrepreneurial activity
while striving to achieve long-term sustainability
of SLNRA enabling us to continue our ‘grass
roots’ development role within our local rural
communities. Community Business opportunities for
SLNRA will be examined.

Wetlands Signposting
This project is being lead by Brian Johnston –
Tourism Officer for Craigavon Borough Council and
involves identifying key features to signpost and
highlight within the southern shores. Focus will be
on our Christian Heritage, Recreational activities,
Fishing villages and access routes. Finance for this
project will be sought from the Interreg III programme
for the East Borders Region.

Water Based Recreation
The Lough along with it rivers and canals are seen
as a major recreational resource with good economic
potential for local entrepreneurship. Projects will
continue to focus upon putting further waterside infrastructure
in place particularly in the Maghery Cut and at Derrytrasna
Pier. Finances will be identified through the Lough
Neagh Structural Fund, Department of Culture, Arts
and Leisure (DECAL) and from private sources.

Derrywarragh Island
Access
SLNRA have already sourced 50% funding for this project
which will create a signed posted walk out to Derrywarragh
headland and O’Connors Stronghold (Derrywarragh
stack). This project is being undertaken in conjunction
with Craigavon Borough Council and local landowners.
Further finances are being sought from Environment
and Heritage Service to augment the secured funding.

Wetlands Project Planning
Financial support has been secured to implement
a business plan focusing on the built, natural and
cultural heritage of The Wetlands. This project will
help to identify ownership, costs and resources needed
to enhance the key characteristics of the region.
This will prove a very useful tool for submitting
applications for these projects in the future.
