The South Lough Neagh Regeneration Association is
a voluntary, cross community, rural and community
development group established in November 1993.
Following a public meeting of residents a range of
diverse problems came to light which needed to be
addressed. In particular, the social isolation and
economic stagnation which many felt was due to the
lack of river crossings over the rivers Upper Bann
and Black water.
The area defined as 'South Lough Neagh', is the
region north of the M1 motorway, stretching from and
including Aughagallon, Derrymacash, Derrytrasna, Derryinver,
The Birches and Maghery in County Armagh; to Derryloughan
and Derrytresk in County Tyrone. The region is approx
50 square miles in size, and is divided into 3 separate
entities by the two rivers which run through it. This
is a rural lowland and wetland environment embracing
both traditions with a population of around 5500.
Since the inception of the Association the voluntary
committee has opened and staffed a community resource
office where the initial implementation of a range
of social, economic and environmental projects have
helped to enhance the villages along the south shore
of the Lough.
